Traffic Stop Leads to Multiple Arrests

A traffic stop conducted by a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department K9 deputy Sunday, December 31 at about 1 a.m. ET resulted in the arrest of several suspects.

The traffic stop occurred in the area of Gatewood Estates Mobile Home Park in LaPaz. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Ashton Gaines of Plymouth. The vehicle was also occupied by two male subjects identified as 40-year-old Kelly Cowger Jr. and 40-year-old Jason McFarland, both of Plymouth.


During the traffic stop, K9 Diesel conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle. Upon doing so, Diesel was alerted to the presence of narcotic odors in the vehicle, according to the report. Police say suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia were located. Cowger had active warrants, one felony warrant for robbery, and one body attachment for contempt of court.


All three occupants were taken into custody and transported to the Marshall County Jail.

Gaines was booked on preliminary charges of assisting a criminal when the person assisted or committed a Level 3, 4, 5, or 6 Felony, possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, and possession of paraphernalia.


McFarland was booked on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana with a prior conviction.

Cowger was booked on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana with a prior conviction and his two active warrants.


The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Plymouth Police Department and the Bremen Police Department.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
