The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members were updated Monday night on an issue with the public parking lot at the corner of Laporte and Center Streets.
Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt said his department is looking into the problem.
“A couple of our guys found a spot in there that seems to be sinking some. It’s close to the curb. I believe it’s probably old foundation under there or a building dropped in foundation. I know there was years ago when we had some dug out and repaired. You can kind of see maybe where a wall is, but for the winter we have kind of rerouted some parking and blocked some parking in there to keep you from sliding into a curb there,” explained Marquardt.
Marquardt said when the weather warms up more exploratory work will be done to resolve the sinking problem. The city may need to hire a company to dig out more foundation, but that decision will not be made until the department crews can better assess the situation.
