Culver Town Manager Kevin Danti approached the Marshall County Commissioners last week regarding a proposition by the Culver Redevelopment Commission for a joint economic development project between the Town of Culver and Marshall County for the construction of storage facilities adjacent to, but outside the Town of Culver limits north of West Jefferson Street in Culver.
The new construction would be part of the TIF District for the Town of Culver.
Commission President Stan Klotz stated that he does not have a problem with TIF Districts but noted a potential negative impact to those communities that establish them. “I don’t have a problem with any of this, the problem I have when it comes to TIF Districts, as a Commissioner, it winds up taking money away from your public safety, your schools and stuff like that. So I think we have to be very careful about that.”
Danti answered, “Yes, Sir.”
Klotz continued, “Not that I’m opposed to this project but I get tired of people implementing TIF Districts and then coming back to us and telling us we don’t have enough money for public safety.”
Danti said, “Yes, Sir.”
Klotz continued, “Because you kind of cause your own problem. So, I mean, we just need to be cautious doing this.”
Danti agreed.
Vice President Michael Burroughs made a motion to accept the proposed request as presented in the Town of Culver, in a resolution, to turn the parcel requested over to the Culver Redevelopment Commission. Klotz seconded. The motion passed.
In other news, the Commissioners appointed Loretta Schmidt to continue as their appointment to the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation Board. Her appointment will begin on January 1, 2024 and continue through December 31, 2026.
