Anyone with comments concerning about 55 improvement concepts included in a Universe of Alternatives Report concerning the future of the U.S. 30 west corridor may give those comments in person to team members during community office hours this Saturday.

Residents may attend the Argos Public Library Saturday, December 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET to give comments in person, or at the Porter County Public Library in Valparaiso Saturday, December 2 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

The Universe of Alternatives Report is a product of engineer study and public comment as a result of collaborative planning and environment linkages, or ProPEL studies. It involves possible improvements to the U.S. 30 and U.S. 31 corridors.

The ProPEL U.S. 30 West study area includes U.S. 30 from State Road 49 in Valparaiso to South Beech Road in Marshall County. The U.S. 30 West study area also includes U.S. 31 from the U.S. 30 interchange in Marshall County south to west County Road 700 North in Fulton County.

According to the report, the purpose of transportation improvements along the U.S. 30 West corridor is “to improve regional mobility and safety along U.S. 30 and U.S. 31 and preserve both as vital statewide transportation corridors for moving people and goods”.

The 103-page document discusses primary concepts such as no build, access management, limited access freeway, median safety improvements, the addition or lengthening of turn lanes, adding or extending acceleration and deceleration lanes, a cross road overpass or underpass, and signalized and unsignalized intersection improvements. Complementary concepts were also included which detail signage, information systems, intersection improvements, signal timing updates, warning systems, a freight priority system, and much more.

The entire document can be accessed here. The document is also available for review at the Argos Public Library, the Knox Branch of the Henry F. Schricker Public Library, the Hanna Public Library, the Christopher Center Library in Valparaiso and the Porter County Public Library in Valparaiso.

Public comments on the draft Universe of Alternatives will be accepted until December 22, 2023.
