Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield asked the Culver Town Council members for permission to purchase a trailer for dive equipment out of the fire department’s budget.
He explained that there are new qualified scuba divers ready to assist in an emergency and with that comes equipment. A list was made up and it came to $25,000. A donor was found to purchase the equipment in The G3 Foundation.
While that donor pays for all of the diver’s equipment, Wakefield explained it would be beneficial to store that equipment in an enclosed trailer. The trailer that would best suit the particular needs of the department would be a 16 foot trailer at a cost of $12,000.
Wakefield noted that the divers have agreed to put up $4,000 toward the cost of the trailer, and the fire department’s budget could handle the balance of the cost. He asked for the council’s permission to purchase the trailer with $8,000 from the fire department’s budget.
He first presented the request during the October 24 meeting. A motion was made by Councilman Rich West to approve the request, but that motion failed for lack of a second. Wakefield made the information and request available to the council again during the November 14 meeting which was moved, seconded and approved with a unanimous vote.
