Culver Community School Board Receives Update on School Improvement Plans

The Culver Community School Board members were updated on the Culver Middle/High School and Culver Elementary School Improvement Plans during their recent meeting.

Middle/High School Principal Brett Berndt went over the ILEARN scores for the Math and English/Language Arts for the schools, which he recognized need improvement as the 6th, 7th and 8th grade scores were mostly under the state average and in the lower percentage as compared to other schools in the area.  There is a goal to increase scores five percent each year and to review deficiencies in Math and English/Language Arts.

He said as far as School Improvement Plans, the corporation is focused on the graduation rate and to reach at least 92 percent or above, graduation pathways, student accountability and disciplines, effective model of instruction, student monitoring, and attendance.  He noted that the School Resource Officers have been instrumental.

Elementary School Principal Erika James went over the IREAD scores with the school board.  She explained that 3rd graders need to pass IREAD in order to move onto 4th grade and 97 percent of the 3rd graders passed the most recent exam which has been set as the state goal for Indiana schools.  She said 2nd graders take the IREAD test to get a benchmark, but if the 2nd graders pass the test they do not need to take it again the next year.

ILEARN scores for the school were overall fairly over the state average in English/Language Arts, while Math results were a little under the state average.

As far as School Improvement Plans, James stated that the goals center around attendance, ILEARN scores, and behavior and disciplines.  She noted that a Science of Reading program is working well for Elementary School students and a new Math curriculum was implemented this year to help students meet state standards.
