Plymouth City Council Discusses Salary Ordinance

The Plymouth City Council approved an ordinance that fixes salaries of appointed officers and employees, fire and police personnel of the City of Plymouth for the Year 2024 on third reading.

City of Plymouth Attorney Sean Surrisi offered two proposed amendments for discussion prior to approval.

The first was an adjustment in the Human Resource Manager salary to $56,534.18.  The salary approved in first and second reading was $46,775.76.

The second amendment was for an adjustment in the Plymouth Fire Chief salary to $84,829.92 bringing that equal to the current salary of the Chief of Police.

During the discussion on the motion, Member Greg Compton suggested possible incremental increases to the Human Resources Salary as opposed to the “immense” increase all at once.

Clerk-Treasurer Lynn Gorski did inform the Council that neither raise was budgeted for in the 2024 budget.

Member Don Ecker made an amendment to Houin’s motion to support a 13 percent increase for the Human Resource position in 2024; as opposed to the suggested amount.

Surrisi agreed that the raises were not included in the 2024 Budget but that funds are available to sustain them with each department’s budget without the need for any additional appropriation.

There was already the motion made on the floor by Houin with a second by Shiloh Milner so it was on him to make the amendment if he chose.

Houin said he was comfortable with Ecker’s recommendation to limit the raise for Human Resources by 13 percent over the proposed 2024 Salary; so he amended his motion to reflect that.

The Council did approve the ordinance with those amendments with a majority vote 5 to 2 with Compton and Randy Longanecker voting against the motion.
