Bourbon Town Council Updated on Police Report, Hiring Status, Unused Vacation Time

Bourbon Police Department (BPD) Chief Bill Martin recently updated the Bourbon Town Council with his monthly report for August 2023, along with a hiring challenge and unused vacation time.

Member Terry Clemens asked Chief Martin if there was progress on hiring. Chief Martin said that seven applicants will go through testing on September 22 and 23.

President Ward Byers addressed the item of unused vacation time. Due to limited employees, Chief Martin could not be sure that he and other officers could use their vacation before the end of the calendar year.

Byers asked how much time would need compensated, Chief Martin could not provide that number exactly for his other officer.

Byers recommended further discussion in October when Chief Martin could clarify those numbers for the Council.

Vice President Les McFarland suggested that the situation won’t change in October since the department is currently down two officers. McFarland recommended moving forward with the approval to pay out any remaining vacation time at the end of the year.

Byers and Clemens both agreed with McFarland that the officers should be compensated; however Byers stated that he would prefer to approve a specific dollar amount based on number of days remaining for each officer and requested that the Council hold the vote off until clarification.

Clerk-Treasurer Kim Berger offered to provide that data at the October meeting.

Chief Martin reported 817 Daily Log Entries during the month of August 2023.

The Bourbon Police Department Activity Report for August 2023 included four accidents reported, 18 uniform traffic tickets, four ordinance tickets, 42 school patrols, fourteen written warnings, 78 verbal warnings, one vehicle identification check, 53 traffic details including radar checks, seven motorist assists, six attempts to locate and 17 foot patrols.

The BPD Criminal Activity Report for August 2023 included six felony arrests, nine misdemeanor arrests, 12 case reports assigned, and two alarms.

The Administrative and General Report included 99 office details, zero firearms applications, zero record check / processing, 30 general complaints, 20 requests for service, 147 security checks, 60 public contacts, 23 assists to other agencies, seven animal complaints, one notice served, two doors or windows found open, two family disturbance complaints, four suspicious persons or vehicles, and 11 calls to 9-1-1.
