The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board members received an update on the progress of the relocation of the old West Township Trustee cabin last week.
The old West Township Trustee cabin now sits at Memorial Forest at the corner of State Road 17 and 14th Road.
The building was carefully removed from its original location at 10108 State Road 17 across from the old West Township School in August 2022. Crews from Yoder’s Log and Timber in Nappanee worked to carefully disassemble the log cabin for its new home at Memorial Forest.
Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board member Richard Markley said work will resume soon as the workers for the company that is restoring the cabin are busy at other work sites.
Yoder’s Log and Timber workers restored the original logs and had to replace a few due to age deterioration. There were more logs that were replaced than what was originally thought so there will be some added cost to the project.
The entire building will be stained when the assembly is complete.
J&M Services has installed a meter base and electric infrastructure to the property to have electric available for security and special events at a cost of $1,200. With that, more research will go into what will be needed to incorporate security at the site including cameras that would utilize the newly installed fiber in the area. Board Secretary Deb VanDeMark said she contacted REMC and someone will talk to her about getting cameras there as they have worked with other parks with this similar request.
The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board will hold their next meeting at Memorial Forest June 1 at 6 p.m. ET and as usual the public is welcome to attend.
