Two Walkerton Residents Arrested in Marshall County Investigation

Two Walkerton residents were arrested Thursday, May 11 after an investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say several calls were reportedly made to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department about children not receiving proper care and not attending school. 

Information in an investigation that spanned several weeks was forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office and the Department of Child Services.  As a result, arrest warrants were issued for two people. 

Detectives with the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department went to a residence at Koontz Lake where 46-year-old Heather Havens was arrested, according to the report.  She faces three Level 6 Felony counts of neglect of a dependent, deprives dependent of education as required by law.

Detectives with the Department of Child Services went to a residence in Marshall County and arrested 29-year-old Kayla Hiler on four Level 6 Felony counts of neglect of a dependent, places dependent in situation that endangers the dependent, and two counts of neglect of a dependent, deprives dependent of education as required by law.

They are in the Marshall County Jail with a bond of $5,000 cash. 

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
