Plymouth Common Council approves American Containers Tax Abatement

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Common Council approved Resolution No. 2023-1052 confirming the adoption of a declaratory resolution designating certain real estate within the city of Plymouth to be within an “economic revitalization area” for purposes of real and personal property tax abatement for American Containers, Inc..

American Containers was approved for a tax abatement on an estimated $6M in capital investment in real estate and equipment for their Plymouth facility. The facility at 2526 Western Ave. in Plymouth will be expanded to include new machines that produce corrugated plastic packaging for the pharmaceutical industry.

City of Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter said he appreciated that the company was still locally owned.

In a follow-up interview with Marshall County Economic Development Corporation President / CEO Greg Hildebrand, he summarized that the expansion is conservatively estimated to produce four to five new positions and retain 13 employees currently employed. American Container currently employs 71 people at this location. The Plymouth location is the headquarters of American Container.

A seven-year phase in tax abatement was approved for the expected $3.5M in real estate improvements and an additional $2.5M in equipment or personal property. By phasing in the additional assessed value of this capital investment American Container will save an estimated $496,497 over the seven years while paying an additional $494,003 in net property taxes over the same period.

Michael Isban, President of American Containers, and Phil Brumbaugh, General Manager, spoke previously about the expansion and the products that they will be producing.

The 35,000 sq. ft. expansion will be on the west side of the facility near Western Ave. The expansion will include several new lines of equipment. One new piece of equipment is a continuous plastic welding machine that American Container has developed in house and has applied for patents on. This piece of equipment is expected to increase productivity several fold to help keep up with the added demand for their product.

“American Container is a local success story and Plymouth is proud to have their world headquarters here in our community,” said Hildebrand. “The Isban family and American Container have been an important part of the growth and success of the city, county, and region. We are fortunate to have several world headquarters located in Marshall County.”
