John Glenn School Superintendent Discusses State Budget with School Board

With Indiana’s legislative session concluding and 48 new laws being passed that will directly impact public education, John Glenn School Superintendent Christopher Winchell updated the John Glenn School Board on a scare that they had pertaining to the State-approved school budget for the John Glenn School Corporation.

“What usually happens is the House runs a budget, the Senate runs a budget and they meet somewhere in the middle. This year was very unique in that the House presented a budget, the Senate presented their budget and the budget that came out was way less than what we had anticipated,” informed Mr. Winchell.

There were talks of about a 10% increase in the budget over the next two years. What actually got passed was somewhere around a 5% increase. When this information was released, Winchell, along with others, began contacting their legislators and Senate to ask them to reconsider.

“Even after the legislative session was over and the budget was passed something unprecedented happened,” said Mr. Winchell. “The legislators sat down for a third session and came up with a new budget.”

The new approved budget is now a 6.1% increase the first year and a 1.4% increase the second year. If you look at the Foundation amount, that’s the base amount for all students not tied to any stipulations, this puts them at $12,148,025 at 1,947 students enrolled this year to $12,889,810 next year if they have 1,956 students enrolled. This puts them at an increase of $350 per student in the first year and another $100 increase the second year.
