The Culver Community School Board members discussed a quote for asbestos removal during their meeting Monday night.
Superintendent Karen Shuman commented that asbestos was found in domestic piping in the joint compounds that contained asbestos. The current pipes were installed in 1968 and the board previously approved the updating of the domestic piping in a facilities update this summer.
Shuman asked the board to approve the expense as the process goes on. It is not anticipated that the cost would be more than the $50,000 threshold, but wanted the approval just in case.
The board unanimously approved the request. Specialty Systems is expected to start the week of May 29.
Additionally, Shuman said it is recommended that the ceiling grid and tiles be removed from the gym as it is a constant maintenance issue. Shuman said it is preferred that the gym ceiling be painted and now would be the time to do it. The board unanimously approved the quote from Premier Painting to repaint the gym ceiling to black at a cost of $65,520. They also unanimously approved a quote from Schwartz Electric in the amount of $15,159.60 to remove and install lights in the gym ceiling.
Both expenses will be paid out of the bond funds obtained for the facility projects.
