The old West Township Trustee cabin in Marshall County has found a new home at Memorial Forest at the corner of State Road 17 and 14th Road.
The building was carefully removed from its original location at 10108 State Road 17 across from the old West Township School in August. Crews from Yoder’s Log and Timber in Nappanee worked to carefully disassemble the log cabin for its new home at Memorial Forest.
Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board member Richard Markley said he has been out at the site since the relocation process began to take shape at the end of March. The structure has all of the logs set, and floor joists and a subfloor and sheeting put on the roof. The windows and doors will be put in soon.
Yoder’s Log and Timber workers restored the original logs and had to replace a few due to age deterioration.
The members shared how happy they were to see the progress and how nice the cabin looks with the expert craftsmanship.
Markley said a few pine trees should be removed in that area and the timber could be fashioned into a pavilion for Memorial Forest. Nothing was decided during the meeting.
The park board approved a motion for J&M Services to install a meter base and electric infrastructure to the property to have electric available for security and special events at a cost of $1,200.
Additionally, more research will go into what will be needed to incorporate security at the site.
Once the project is complete, the park board will host a dedication ceremony to commemorate the building.
