Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board Receives Grant

The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board was successful in obtaining a grant.

Board President Greg Hildebrand recently went before the Marshall County Commissioners and Marshall County Council to apply for a NIPSCO grant for a specific project.

“It’s $5,000 grant through NIPSCO for some evasive weed eradication in two park properties,” said Hildebrand. “We did that inventory on our properties in the county and there is a problem with invasive series, especially the honeysuckle bush.”

Purple Loosestrife is also an evasive plant that will be addressed in a future project.

Both the commissioners and the council approved the grant request.

The board learned this week that they won the 2023 Environmental Action Grant. The program provides support to 15 local nonprofit organizations in their efforts to restore the environment and provide stewardship and sustainability education across northern Indiana with funding from NIPSCO and the NiSource Charitable Foundation.

This year’s projects focus on animal preservation, habitat restoration, youth outdoor nature education and sustainability programming. Many of the selected projects and programs include a significant volunteer and community engagement component, encouraging community members to give back through environmental stewardship projects.
