Marshall County Auditor Angie Birchmeier would like to remind taxpayers to check their tax statements to ensure the proper deductions are being credited.
There are many deductions available to the public about which taxpayers may not be aware. As such, Birchmeier is beginning a monthly educational series of press releases to explain available deductions, what they are and who may be eligible for them. There are many deductions available to property owners, with the potential of saving hundreds of dollars annually.
The most utilized deduction is the Homestead Standard Deduction and Supplemental Homestead Deduction. This is available to all who own a home, mobile home or are buying on a recorded land contract and use it as your primary residence. Only one homestead is allowed per State of Indiana IC 6-1.1-12-37 per married couple. Homestead Deductions need only be filed once on your residence. This would only need to be re-filed if you move.
Other available deductions are Solar Energy Heating or Cooling Systems, Solar Power Device, Wind Power Device, Hydroelectric Power Device, Geothermal Device, Heritage Barn, Over 65, Over 65 Circuit Breaker Credit, Fertilizer & Pesticide Storage, Blind or Disabled, Total Disabled Veteran or Veteran at Least 62 with Disability of 10% or more, Deduction for Homestead Donated to Veteran, Veteran with Service-Connected Disability and Surviving Spouse of World War I Veteran. More information concerning requirements for these deductions will be released in the future.
Deduction applications must be completed and dated by December 31 before the first year the taxpayer wishes to claim the deduction. The deduction paperwork must be filed with the Auditor’s Office.
The Marshall County Building is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
