The Culver Community School Board members were presented with a Memorandum of Understanding with the Culver Youth Club this week.
Superintendent Karen Shuman explained that the language in the MOU allows the Culver Youth Club to potentially seek a design of a building to be constructed on the campus of the Culver Community School Corporation should there be a need for a new building due to capacity concerns.
The topic was discussed at the school board’s last meeting where it was in the discussion stages of the Culver Youth Club to potentially build a new building on the campus of the Culver Community School Corporation. The club’s members currently meet in the Culver Elementary School where they have access to a few classrooms and the gym and cafeteria.
The new building, if approved, would have classrooms, a gym, and walking track which could be used as an E-Hub for members of the community and fitness center when the Youth Club is not in session.
The project would be paid for through the efforts of the Culver Youth Club and not from funds in the school corporation’s budget.
Board member Michael Pazin said he is a member of the Culver Youth Club Board and suggested tabling the MOU until more information is gathered. Board member J.D. Uebler said many other things need to be considered such as items brought up by Business Manager/Treasurer Casey Howard concerning management of utilities, insurance and maintenance.
Shuman further stated that there would be more decisions to be made if the Culver Youth Club proceeds with actual construction, such as a lease and other specific criteria in additional agreements for the board to review, if it gets to that point.
Shuman added that Corporation Attorney Jeff Houin thought that the MOU was appropriate for the board to consider, but Culver Youth Club Attorney Jeanette Surrisi was still reviewing the document.
The board agreed to table the consideration of the MOU once more information is obtained.
