The Culver Community School Board members were updated on the proposed dissolution of the JESSE Cooperative this week.
Superintendent Karen Shuman reminded the board that they approved a resolution during their December 5 meeting that authorizes the dissolution of the JESSE Cooperative following a recommendation from the JESSE Board of Managers. The termination would be effective June 30, 2023.
The JESSE Board of Managers consists of all of the superintendents from the nine participating schools which include the Culver Community School Corporation, Argos Community Schools, John Glenn School Corporation, Knox Community School Corporation, North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, Oregon-Davis School Corporation, Plymouth Community School Corporation, Triton School Corporation, and the Union-North United School Corporation.
During Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Karen Shuman said since the board’s approval of the resolution it was learned that the recommendation was not made by a unanimous vote by the Board of Managers. Thus, the resolution is null and void.
Shuman said Plymouth Community School Corporation is still planning to withdraw from the JESSE Cooperative which leaves the organization without a Local Education Agency (LEA). If there is no LEA by June 2024, JESSE will dissolve. Corporations can withdraw from the cooperative by May 1, 2023, according to Shuman.
No decisions were made by the school board Monday night as discussions are ongoing.
