This week is Fire Prevention Week!
Several area firefighters will be going to the local schools to teach students about fire safety and provide them with fire prevention material. They will also practice fire drills.
Plymouth Fire Chief Steve Holm told MAX News that the Plymouth Fire Department will be hosting an open house at the fire station Saturday, October 15 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET. The open house will include station tours, fire truck and ambulance tours, and a pancake and sausage breakfast. There will be other items for the kids as well.
National Fire Prevention Week is a time for residents to check batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, or buy them if there are no devices in a home.
It is also a time for families to prepare a fire escape plan.
With leaves starting to fall from trees, residents are urged to burn leaves in a responsible manner where it is legal to do so. Firefighters recommend burning leaves on a non-windy day and make sure there is a water source ready in case the fire gets out of hand. Blow out candles before going to sleep or leaving the house, clean lint traps in your dryer regularly, clean wood burning stoves, and clear creosote buildup from chimneys.
