Kite Surfing Incident Claims Life of Bremen Man

A kite surfing accident that claimed the life of a Bremen man Saturday evening in La Porte County is under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.

The La Porte County Dispatch Center received a 911 call just before 5:30 p.m. CT about a man who nearly drowned while kite surfing near Washington Park Beach.

Officers say 56-year-old Douglas Tolle, of Bremen, was participating in a kite surfing lesson when for unknown reasons he began struggling in the water. He was unconscious by the time anyone could reach him, according to the report.

CPR was started and Tolle was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officers say Tolle passed away from his injuries Monday. The preliminary cause of death is cardiac arrest due to drowning, according to the report.

Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted at the scene by Michigan City Police, La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan City Fire Department.
