The old West Township Trustee cabin has been successfully taken down from its site on State Road 17.
Crews from Yoder’s Log and Timber in Nappanee worked to carefully disassemble the log cabin for its new home at Memorial Forest in Marshall County. The project began August 16 and ended August 20.
Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board Member Richard Markley said the logs have been cleaned and stored in a safe place.
“I pretty much spent the whole week there watching them take it down,” said Markley. “Day one they got the roof cut loose, the siding all off of it, all of the windows removed, the doors removed. I think it was day two when they took the siding off and they found a bee nest, bee hive in the wall.”
Markley said he contacted a person he knew to assist them with the bees.
“He filled – I think it was three hives, and a five-gallon bucket with honeycomb.”
It is hoped that the concrete foundation for the new location for the cabin at Memorial Forest can be poured soon with the rest of the project to continue over the next several months.
