Culver Community School Superintendent Karen Shuman went over the updated plans with the school board this week concerning the bond projects to get underway in 2023.
The projects at the Culver Elementary School include a library renovation, handicap lift for the stage, repaving parking lots, redoing water lines, new boilers, tuckpointing in the masonry, and replacing the gym floor.
Tuckpointing will done at the Middle/High School, along with a FACS (Family and Consumer Science) room renovation, locker room renovation, restroom renovation, band and choir room renovations, gym floor replacement, and the installation of a ramp in the high school auditorium instead of a handicap lift. Electrical panels will be updated, and pick-up and drop-off in the back of the school building.
Shuman said great space will be used for the FACS room renovations.
“In that square footage of space, we are able to put in four student culinary stations with work stations and then a whole demonstration station for the teacher. There is just a lot of space there once you remove the middle wall, remove the washing room, remove the mirrored room that was used back in the 1950s. So, we’re going to be able to add two more classrooms which we think is key as we grow,” said Shuman.
Shuman added the reason behind the change of the handicap lift to a ramp in the auditorium is the space required to operate the lift. It would decrease the number of seats in the auditorium. The ramp would minimize the impact of the seating loss.
The board will take a tour of the buildings October 10 so they can get more of an in-person view of what changes will take place in the project.
The school board has agreed to take out two series of bonds in the amount of $12,050,000 to finance these updates to the school buildings with a slight increase to the tax rate.
