Court dates have yet to be set for two former Starke County Sheriff’s Department detectives indicted on charges.

Adam Gray, 50, of Knox, and Don Ferguson, 54, of South Bend, were indicted on several charges following a lengthy investigation by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division Lowell Post.

Indiana State Police say evidence and testimony was recently presented to a Grand Jury concerning missing evidence from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Gray was indicted on four counts of official misconduct as a Level 6 Felony, two counts of theft as a Class A Misdemeanor, and dealing paraphernalia and dealing marijuana, both as Class A Misdemeanors.

Court documents state that on or about 2018 to 2019 Gray delivered paraphernalia and marijuana to another person while in the capacity of a law enforcement officer of the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.  Gray also allegedly delivered marijuana and paraphernalia to that person which were said to be obtained from the evidence room from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.  Court documents also state that United States currency was also said to have been taken by Gray from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Ferguson was indicted on three counts of official misconduct as a Level 6 Felony, theft of a firearm as a Level 6 Felony, theft as a Class A Misdemeanor, and false informing as a Class B Misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Ferguson is said to have taken several prescription pills in 2018 or 2019 that were the property of the Starke County Sheriff’s Department while in his capacity as a detective at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. The documents also state he gave a false statement in a police report.  He also allegedly took several firearms that were in the possession of another person in December 2020 while as a law enforcement officer at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in a court of law.
