The Plymouth City Council members considered an additional appropriation ordinance last week that would allow the Plymouth Police Department to purchase new handguns.
A public hearing was held on the matter where Chief David Bacon explained that it is time for the officers to have new service weapons.
“We change over weapons about every 10 years,” explained Chief Bacon. “We last did that in 2012 or 2013 so we’re due. We’re changing calibers so we do a complete changeover. We normally budget money in the Law Enforcement Continuing Education fund. It’s not taxpayer money.”
Money was budgeted in other supplies, but nothing in the fund requested.
Chief Bacon said 27 weapons will be purchased. The old weapons will be traded in to a company, or the officer can purchase his or her weapon at the trade-in price.
Aside from questions from the council members, there was no other public comment.
The public hearing was closed and the council later unanimously voted to adopt the ordinance, thus approving the $16,000 additional appropriation.
