Elkhart County Crash Claims Life of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski

Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski and three other people died as a result of a two-vehicle accident in Elkhart County Wednesday afternoon.

According to Elkhart County Sheriff Jeff Siegel, deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 19 south of State Road 119 just after 12:30 p.m. ET.  A northbound passenger vehicle, driven by 56-year-old Edith Schmucker of Nappanee, traveled left of center and collided head-on with a southbound SUV, according to the report.

Police say all occupants in the southbound vehicle died as a result of their injuries.  Congresswoman Walorski, 58, of Elkhart, was in that southbound vehicle, along with 27-year-old Zachery Potts of Mishawaka and 28-year-old Emma Thompson of Washington, DC.

Schmucker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing with the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. 

Several state and federal officials have released statements on social media concerning the tragic death of Congresswoman Walorski and all involved.
