The John Glenn School Board members took time this week to honor the life of Richard “Dick” Reese who was a former student, educator and corporation superintendent at John Glenn School Corporation.
Reese passed away May 31 and his funeral was held at Urey Middle School in Walkerton Sunday, June 5, which was handled by the Rannells Funeral Home.
John Glenn School Superintendent Christopher Winchell, who succeeded Reese when he retired in 2019, offered comments during the school board meeting Tuesday night.
Winchell commented, “I wanted to take a moment here and once again thank Mr. Reese for his contributions to this community and the school corporation that he left better than he found it and ask for everyone’s help that we continue that work and we’ll all leave it better than what we found it.
Winchell noted that Reese served as principal at Urey Middle School for 22 years, and as the John Glenn School Corporation superintendent for 14 years. He was also involved with education in Chesterton and Knox Community School Corporation. He was known as a huge supporter of doing what was best for students no matter which corporation he served.
Knox Community School Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart said the Knox Community School Board recognized Reese’s efforts in education there during their meeting Tuesday night.
“We did take a moment to honor him,” stated Dr. Reichhart. “He was a former assistant principal with us and was just a wonderful school leader and public education promoter at John Glenn. He was very highly regarded among all of the superintendents in the State of Indiana and he will be deeply missed – not only as a superintendent, but also a friend and colleague.”
Memorial contributions in Reese’s memory may be given to the John Glenn Education Foundation or John Glenn Athletic Department.
