Bremen Elementary/Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska gave the Bremen School Board members an update on the district’s Alternative School during the board’s recent meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Jim White said the Alternative School became available to students at the beginning of the school year.
“We’re leveraging some of those federal ESSER funds to do that and I think it’s done fairly well,” said Dr. White. “It’s a small environment with 10 or 12 students, but I think it really gives those students kind of a consistency of one instructor throughout the course of the day and the extra attention they need,”
Student behaviors have improved, according to Yelaska’s report.
Dr. White said certain students qualify to take part in the Alternative School.
“It’s a joint collaboration between past classroom teachers, administrators and talking to the parents themselves. A lot of times they’re kids who haven’t had a lot of success yet in a regular academic room and we want to give them the opportunity for some other enrichment.”
Dr. White believes that the Alternative School is a positive addition to the school district and officials will see how it improves as it continues to assist students.
