The Marshall County Courthouse Clock Tower project is moving along, although the weather has not been on the side of significant progress.
Midwest Maintenance, Inc. Foreman/Supervisor Jerry Hazeltine gave an update on the renovation effort to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning.
“All of the exterior columns, the decorative scrollwood – all of that has been removed,” explained Hazeltine. “We have out the four louvers where the windows are going to be replaced. Basically, we are down to smooth sides. All of the siding is still there until our roofers get done. They’re on site now putting in the two new water tables. Once they’re installed, the carpenters will begin again taking off the siding and installing new siding.”
Once the siding is complete, some of the more decorative pieces of wood will be re-installed.
One portion of work that has not been done is the eyebrow work on the clock.
Hazeltine continued, “Once the siding is back on we start some of our decorative wood back on. That’s when they’ll go up to the eyebrows. The whole clock will come out at that time on all four sides. We’ll close that up and then the new roofing and the new siding and everything will be installed on the eyebrows.”
The clock will then go back in and then the painters will return to complete work. Following that, the scaffolding will be removed and the project will be complete.
Hazeltine noted that several pieces removed from the courthouse have made their way to the Marshall County Historical Society Museum to be catalogued and displayed as part of the 150th celebration of the courthouse this year.
The 150th celebration event is tentatively scheduled for June 11, and it is the hope that the project is done by then.
