More than 200 state and local law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
Indiana law required the driver and all passengers to use a seat belt. Children under the age of eight must be properly restrained in a federally approved child car seat or booster seat.
The enforcement began Monday, May 16 and officers will be out until after the Memorial Day weekend to make sure drivers and passengers are wearing seat belts properly and children are properly secure. Throughout the campaign, officers will be watching for seat belt and car seat violations while conducting high-visibility patrols during the day and night.
Drivers can be cited for lack of seat belt use, and for each unbuckled passenger under the age of 16.
According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, since the “Click it or Ticket” campaign started more than 20 years ago, seat belt use has gone up 30 percent in Indiana to 92.9 percent which is slightly higher than the national average of 90.3 percent.
