Groundbreaking Held in LaPaz for New Housing Development

Officials broke ground on a new workforce housing project in LaPaz Monday morning.

The project, LaPaz Commons, is part of Marshall County’s Marshall County Crossroads Stellar plan to improve the quality of life.  The project uses Low Income Housing Tax Credits to enable the development which were awarded by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

Developer Kevin Berger discussed what would be included in the project which breaks down to two flats and six townhomes.

“This project will have eight units and five of them will be three-bedroom, three of them will be two-bedroom, and two of them will be ADA accessible,” explained Berger.  “All of them are ADA accessible.  The site is going to line up on Troyer Street.  LaPaz has stepped up and is going to do the improvements on Troyer Street.”

LaPaz Town Council President Roger Ecker noted that the partnership between communities in Marshall County continues to be the key in getting these projects done for the residents of the county and who want to move to the county.

“This is the first housing development in right at 20 years in LaPaz,” stated Ecker.  “We’re really looking forward to this.  This brings some housing and bringing a new look to LaPaz.  It’s the spark that’s going to get the fire going.  We hope that we have water that comes in so we can put the fire out next.  Once we get water, we’re going to grow and we’re going to go.  We’re not going to be a dead city.”

Berger mentioned that several local companies have been selected as subcontractors for the project, including the financing on the housing development.

The new housing units are anticipated to be available in late 2023.
