MARSHALL COUNTY — During this month’s meeting of the Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board, it was announced that they have been awarded $4,000 through Arrow Head Country Resource Conservation and Development.
The organization received 20 applications from seven of the 10 counties represented by Arrow Head. The grant is for a feasibility study to determine the best locations for a canoe/kayak launch along the Yellow River.
As far as kayak projects, West Township Trustee Terry Borggren told the board that he had talked to one of the County Commissioners about the chance of tying in a kayak launch into one of the current bridge projects.
“I checked with USI who’s doing the engineering work on that. It’s really too late in the game to get in there. If we wanted to push it, they could get it in. It takes some time with permits and everything and it would also probably delay the bridge projects,” Borggren.
He said that because of the Bremen project, he thought the site at Hickory Road could a possible launch.
The board discussed hiring USI to conduct the feasibility study, but no motion was made until more research into if they need to bid it out.
In other park board business, an update on the trustee’s cabin was given. Stakes were the cabin will be moved to were placed. “My thought was, if we set it at an angle, if you’re on (State Road) 17 you can see two sides of it and if you’re on 14th Road you can see the other two sides of it. I was thinking as much for looks as security,” said Park Board Member Richard Markley.
The timeline for the trustee cabin project would be mid-July or August until it was started.
