Marshall County Community Corrections Officer Helps Children inside Unattended Vehicle

Two young children were brought in from a cold car Monday afternoon after a Marshall County Community Corrections officer found them in the vehicle in the Community Resource Center parking lot.

The officer found the children, ages two and four, inside an unlocked vehicle that was not running, according to the report. The report also states that they were fastened in their car seats and the young boy was attempting to escape and was entangled in the straps of his car seat. The pair had reportedly been inside the car for over a half hour.  The outdoor temperature was 20 degrees.

They were safely taken inside the Community Corrections office until they were turned over to the Department of Child Services, according to the report.

The father, Dustin Kanschat, had been at Marshall County Community Corrections for an appointment as part of his Pre-Trial Release and allegedly failed a drug screen and was incarcerated, according to Executive Director Ward Byers.

The incident was reported to the Plymouth Police Department and it remains under investigation by police and the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
