Marshall County Community Corrections Executive Director Ward Byers gave the Community Corrections Advisory Board members year-end statistics during their most recent meeting.
Byers said many Level 5 and Level 6 Felony offenders are sentenced to Community Corrections and it follows the changes in the Criminal Code in 2014.
Byers stated, “It’s keeping those level felonies housed locally, whether that’s in Community Corrections, probation or the jail, and not utilizing the space at the Indiana Department of Corrections, but utilizing their space for the more serious, violent felons.”
Byers commented on the most common offense for which a Community Corrections client may be sentenced.
Byers continued, “Our most common offense is possession of a controlled substance, as well as operating while intoxicated. That is still a thing, whether it’s under the influence of some sort of a drug such as marijuana or other drugs, or alcohol.”
There were only 32 violations in 2021. Byers noted that if there is a failed drug test, methamphetamine and marijuana are the top two substances used by offenders.
There are currently 98 Marshall County Community Corrections clients.
