The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus was detected in a specimen collected from an Indiana resident, according to an announcement from the Indiana Department of Health Sunday.
Health officials say the specimen was collected Dec. 9 from the patient who was notified of the positive test.
The Omicron variant is the latest mutation of the virus that causes COVID-19. The World Health Organization labeled it a variant of concern on Nov. 26. Studies have shown that the variant spreads more easily and faster than the Delta variant.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box recommends taking steps to protect against getting the virus. She encourages getting the vaccine and wearing masks while out in public. Get a COVID-19 test if symptoms occur after being exposed to someone with COVID-19, stay home when sick, and wash hands frequently.
The adult and pediatric COVID-19 vaccines are free. To learn more about the vaccine, find a vaccination site, or make an appointment to get a vaccine, visit www.ourshot.in.gov or call 211.
