The Plymouth Community School Board members discussed the tentative Master Teacher Contract when they met Tuesday night.
Superintendent Mitch Mawhorter gave some of the highlights of the contract between the school corporation and the Teacher’s Union.
“Any qualifying teacher will receive $1,500 to their base salary and then both sides wanted to follow the legislation’s order to raise the minimum wage to $40,000. We did accomplish that too so all new teachers coming to Plymouth their first year will start at that rate,” stated Mawhorter.
He said an effort was made to clarify some other wage procedures in this proposed contract.
Mawhorter explained, “Over the years, because of the way things switched quite a while ago, you used to come in and pretty much followed a schedule and that kind of went by the wayside and people started being able to come in and negotiate a little bit where they started at. You know you’d have a person who is in their fifth year and they might make less than a person who is in their third or fourth year. We cleaned that all up. Some people will get pretty nice raises based on that – the whole idea of catching up.”
Additionally, there were some amendments made in terms of extra-curricular activities to put more personnel in areas to assist the number of kids in certain activities. Mawhorter said the board will look more into the topic next year.
“It will be one of our big tasks to just look at it from top to bottom and see if it’s where we want it to be,” said Mawhorter.
The school board will meet in special session Tuesday, November 9 in order to ratify the Master Teacher Contract.
