The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Department board members discussed the relocation of the West Township Trustee cabin when they met Thursday night.
The building currently resides at 10108 State Road 17 and the property owner would like to have it removed, but keep its historical value.
While the board previously discussed that the cabin could be moved to the old West Township School property across the road from its current location, Board Member Richard Markley said Thursday night that he thought with the progress made at cleaning up Memorial Forest it would be better suited there. There is more room for parking for visitors and a school bus would better fit in that area if there are field trips to view the cabin for historical purposes.
There is more work needed to relocate it to the West Township School property, including the purchase of parcels, and variance approvals. Plus, there is an uncertainty of the new property owner’s plans for the school property.
The other board members agreed with the move to Memorial Forest, where it would remain in West Township. Several audience members in attendance during the meeting agreed that it would be the best place.
The board members formally made a motion to move the cabin to Memorial Forest. A contract already approved with Yoder Log and Timber in Nappanee was signed by the board members after review by County Attorney Jim Clevenger. The contractor will be able to start when available as the project received funding in the 2022 budget.
