The Bourbon Town Council members reviewed a proposed animal control ordinance during their meeting Tuesday night.
Town Attorney Alex Hoover said it addresses ongoing issues.
“We had some issues in town with some dogs getting loose and it’s continuing to happen over and over and over,” said Hoover. “We had an incident where the dog actually bit a child, of my understanding. The problem with our old ordinance is that there really is no action for the town to do outside of holding the animal for a period of about – I think it’s ten days.”
Hoover said the new ordinance would label dogs as nuisances if they are running loose on a consistent basis. If a dog is deemed dangerous, which may involve a dog bite incident, the dog could be euthanized.
Police Chief Bill Martin said he has a few questions and he will go over the ordinance with Hoover with possible revisions to be presented at the next meeting.
There are fines within the ordinance.
The council did approve the first reading of the ordinance. They will review the revised ordinance, if amended, at their next meeting in December and consider it on second reading. When adopted, it will repeal the other ordinance. The ordinance would be advertised as there are fines proposed.
