The John Glenn School Board members reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding last week with the Town of Walkerton for an upcoming shared fuel station project.
Superintendent Christopher Winchell commented that the school board had been investigating the idea of purchasing wholesale fuel for quite some time to save operational expenses. The biggest issue was finding a location for the fueling station.
Winchell said that is when a proposed partnership with the Town of Walkerton came in that would create a location for the fueling station.
The corner of Tyler Road and State Road 23 would be available to house above ground tanks and pumping mechanisms for use by school and town officials.
Winchell noted that the Walkerton Redevelopment Commission agreed to help fund the project with $35,000, with the school putting forth about $50,000 which would involve the cost of concrete, fencing, fuel tanks and pumps. The town would provide the land. The school and the town would each purchase fuel and pay shares accordingly.
The area would be secured with fencing and cameras, and sophisticated software will only allow for pumping fuel by those authorized by the school and the town.
Winchell commented that upwards of $20,000 could be saved annually in fuel costs.
Winchell noted that the Walkerton Town Council approved the Memorandum of Understanding last week. The school board also approved the document with a unanimous vote.
