A Triton High School senior died in a two-vehicle accident in Wells County Saturday, August 28.
According to the Wells County Sheriff’s Department, 17-year-old Cameron Fairchild, of Warsaw, was traveling south on State Road 116 near County Road 400 W. in a black 2008 Honda Civic when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone shortly before 11:30 a.m. ET. Fairchild reportedly lost control of this vehicle while trying to merge back into his lane of travel and collided head-on with a white 2012 Jeep Liberty driven by Lisa Calhoun, 58, of Argos.
Fairchild was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
Police say Calhoun was airlifted from the scene and a passenger in her vehicle was transported to the hospital.
The Wells County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Markle Fire/Rescue, Uniondale Fire Department, Wells County EMS, and Lutheran Air.
Triton Jr./Sr. High School Principal Nate McKeand said support will be provided for students and staff in this difficult time. Clergy and counselors will be available and students may gather in the auditorium for a time with fellow students in order to talk to others as needed. Homecoming and spirit week have been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
