Third Dose of COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Approved for Immunocompromised Individuals

Marshall County Public Health Officer Dr. Byron Holm announced Thursday that the CDC, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a third dose of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised.

Patients who are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised and have completed a two-dose series of a COVID-19 vaccine 28 days or more prior to the additional dose are eligible for the third dose.

Eligible patients include those who have been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood, received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system, or received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.  Patients who have moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency are also eligible along with patients with advanced or untreated HIV infection, or those with active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress immune response.

Immunocompromised people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine series should get a third dose of the same vaccine.  Johnson & Johnson vaccines should not be used as the additional dose.

If you qualify, based on the criteria listed, you can make a vaccination appointment at www.ourshot.in.gov.

The Marshall County Health Department offers a COVID-19 vaccine clinic every Monday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET.
