Students who attend the John Glenn School Corporation’s before and after program may soon be a part of the Boys and Girls Club after the school board supported the change at their school board meeting last week.
Superintendent Christopher Winchell explained that the before and after program is struggling financially. In a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, their officials would take care of all of the finances and hire all of the current staff members who are part of the before and after program. They would possibly see a raise with going to the Boys and Girls Club, but there would be about 40 hours of training in order to tutor to the nationwide curriculum.
The Strive Program would be available to kids from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET which would focus on learning loss in key areas of study which would be free for the next three years. If the grant for the program is not renewed, then it would be part of the cost of the program.
Winchell noted that the cost would one more dollar a day than what current fees are for the before and after program and it would be available at both Walkerton and North Liberty schools.
The teachers support the move and the school board members also put forth their support. Winchell said Memorandum of Understanding paperwork will be reviewed by the school board’s attorney and the club director could give more information to the school board at an upcoming meeting, if needed.
