The Yellow River in Marshall County will see some work after a decision made by the Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission last week.
Commission Executive Director Scott Pelath stated in a press release that a contract with The Stanger Group in Goshen was approved to reconstruct nearly a half-mile of Yellow River banks in Marshall County. The $700,000 cost of the project is funded by a mix of state, regional, and local assessment fees and is expected to begin in early September with a tentative completion date in November.
Work includes substantially reducing the grade, planting erosion control vegetation, and using a combination of on-site rock and wood resources to protect the banks from streamflow.
Controlling eroded sediment from the banks of the Yellow River is a top priority of the commission and it is the members’ long-term flood mitigation mission.
Pelath noted that next year, the commission intends to extend the first phase of bank reconstruction into Starke County. Another bank reconstruction in partnership with Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District is slated for Bremen in the coming months.
