Students at the Argos Community School Corporation started the new school year Tuesday. Superintendent Ned Speicher said so far everything is going smoothly.
Speicher commented, “Last year we couldn’t let any parents in the buildings so this year I think almost all of our parents wanted to walk their kids – especially in the elementary – to their classrooms so we had quite a crowd! It was very positive and everyone is in their classrooms and we’re underway. It’s happening!”
The Argos Community School Board members approved several new hires during their meeting last week to fill some open slots before Tuesday’s opening day, but there are still a few vacancies that need to be filled.
Speicher said the school board members also approved guidance regarding COVID-19 for the start of the school year.
“Our protocols are that we’re recommending masks. They’re not required. Everyone can make their own decision. We have some wearing masks and some not. We had a Health Department vaccination clinic the day before school started and we had quite a few people go through that. The only place we have a required mask mandate is on our buses, said Speicher.”
Students, teachers and staff will also continue with recommended hand washing protocols, screening students who may be showing symptoms of COVID-19, and close contact tracing. If anyone is feeling under the weather, that person should stay home.
Speicher noted that the policy could change if the environment surrounding the pandemic changes. The school board members are satisfied with the current policy.
