Increased Penalties on Catalytic Converter Theft, Drug Dealing Take Effect Today

Those who steal catalytic converters, deal drugs, or engage in rioting face harsher penalties starting today. Starke County Prosecutor Leslie Baker says a number of new state laws impacting the criminal justice system take effect today.

Senate Enrolled Act 167 not only raises the penalty for stealing a catalytic converter but also adds a penalty for buying stolen goods. Rioting can now be enhanced to a Level 6 or Level 5 felony, under Senate Enrolled Act 187, depending on the amount of property damage and whether there are any injuries.

Other laws prohibit Level 2 or 3 felony drug offense sentences from being suspended if the offender has a prior felony, increase penalties for repeat domestic violence offenders, and fund high tech crime units in 10 counties.
