Few Local COVID-19 Cases Reported as State Health Commissioner Touts Vaccines’ Effectiveness

State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box and Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver hold a press conference on Jul. 9.

Just a few new COVID-19 cases were reported over the weekend. Pulaski County had two, and Marshall County had one, according to Monday’s update from the Indiana Department of Health. No new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Indiana over the weekend.

Starke County still has a lower vaccination rate than any of its neighbors. Less than a third of eligible residents there are fully vaccinated. Marshall and Pulaski counties’ vaccination rates are just over 42 percent.

During a press conference last week, State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box touted the vaccines’ effectiveness. Of the almost 2.9 million Hoosiers fully vaccinated, only about 2,700 have since tested positive. “In that same population, we have seen 132 breakthrough cases that required hospitalizations and a total of 46 deaths,” Box explained. “The median age of those deaths is 81 years age old, and more than 91 percent have occurred in individuals over the age of 65.”

Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver says the low number of breakthrough cases means that booster shots aren’t needed yet. But she stressed that health officials will be ready to provide them, if recommendations change.
