The Bremen School Board members reviewed a proposed change to the 2021-2022 school calendar Wednesday night that would move graduation from Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m. ET to Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. ET.
High School Principal Bruce Jennings explained his reasoning to the school board behind the proposed change, saying snow days are not really a factor when making up the school calendar.
“I wanted a healthy gap between the last day and commencement just in case we had to add days on at the end of the year,” Jennings commented. “If that doesn’t exist anymore because of going virtual on snow days, the schedule on the calendar right now says the last day of school is May 23 of 2022 and commencement would be June 5 which is about a 12-day gap. It’s not necessary.”
He said there are no conflicts that night with the IHSAA, but it does lead into the Memorial Day weekend. He stressed the parade through town would still occur following commencement.
Board member Alfredo Alvarado commented that he supports a Friday night graduation day and the rest of the board members agreed.
The school board members unanimously approved a motion that would adjust the school calendar to accommodate the move of graduation day from June 5 to May 27 in 2022.
