Indiana to End Pandemic Unemployment Programs Next Month

Unemployment benefits that were put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic will be ending in Indiana on June 19. Governor Eric Holcomb announced Monday that he plans to end the state’s participation in all federally-funded pandemic unemployment programs.

That means unemployment recipients will no longer get an extra $300 per week or more than 26 weeks of benefits. Independent contractors and gig workers will no longer be able to get unemployment benefits at all.

In a statement Monday, Governor Holcomb noted that Indiana currently has about 116,000 jobs available, and while the economy took a hit last year, “it is roaring like an Indy 500 race car engine now.” Last week, the governor reinstated the requirement that unemployment recipients prove that they’re looking for work, to keep getting benefits after June 1.
