Hoosiers Getting Unemployment Will Once Again Have to Prove They’re Looking for Work

Hoosiers getting unemployment benefits will once again have to prove that they’re looking for work. Starting June 1, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development will resume requiring weekly work search reports, according to the Governor’s Office.

Governor Eric Holcomb officially made the change in an executive order Tuesday, after first announcing it last week. At the time, Holcomb said he was looking into whether Indiana should continue with pandemic-related unemployment programs in general. He said the state’s unemployment rate is nearing pre-pandemic levels, and the labor force is about where it was before COVID. The Department of Workforce Development says Indiana employers have posted more than 115,000 job openings, and the state offers a number of resources for jobseekers.

Tuesday’s executive order also rescinds a number of other COVID-related measures that Holcomb feels are no longer needed or were made permanent by the Indiana General Assembly. Certain restrictions on the sale of alcohol for carryout will be tightened at the end of June, while other provisions will remain the same. Governing bodies will still be able to hold virtual meetings under certain conditions, following the General Assembly’s approval. But corporations will once again have to hold their annual business meetings in person.
