Prescription Drug Take Back Day Planned for April 24

Several Indiana law enforcement agencies are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to participate in the 20th nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Unused medication can become an avenue for someone to abuse it.  According to the Indiana State Police, studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Collection sites will be set up nationwide for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be properly disposed of without threat to the environment. This program is for liquid and pill medications. Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken. Needles, new or used, will not be accepted for disposal. This service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

Residents are encouraged to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs in the possession of deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department who will be stationed that day in the parking lot of the Walgreens Drug Store, at 2014 N. Michigan Street in Plymouth.  There is a drop off bin located at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.  Troopers at any Indiana State Police Post, with the exception of the Toll Road Post, will also accept medications at their post site.
