Plymouth and Marshall County’s long-standing area newspaper is celebrating 170 years of delivering information to residents all over Marshall County.

A Grand Reopening celebration is being held today at The Pilot News’ headquarters at 218 N. Michigan St. in Plymouth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET. The Plymouth Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. ET.  The public is welcome to attend.  Please observe CDC guidelines. Assistant Editor James Master says the paper started out as The Plymouth Pilot when John Q . Howell moved the Rochester Republican’s operations to Plymouth with the new name in 1851.  The City of Plymouth became an incorporated town that same year.

The Plymouth Pilot conducted operations in many buildings throughout the area and was at one point where the Plymouth Public Library is now, according to Master.

The Plymouth Pilot eventually morphed into The Pilot News and settled in downtown Plymouth.  The publication continues to feature news, sports, obituaries, feature stories, editorials, classifieds, and more from Marshall County.  Weekly news and information from the Town of Culver can be found in The Culver Citizen, and regional news from Bremen, Bourbon and Nappanee in the Heartland News.  The Starke County Leader newspaper is also part of the Pilot News Group which features news in the Knox, North Judson, Hamlet, and Bass Lake areas.

More of the in-depth history of the paper can be found in today’s edition of The Pilot News submitted by Mike Boys, whose family has a deep connection with the publication.

There are more than 20 staff members at The Pilot News with editors, writers and delivery drivers.  Visitors are welcome to meet the staff today, tour the current facility and enjoy light refreshments.

Congratulations to our reporting partners in this historic observance!
